The Golf Courses - Hard Days Night Hotel Golf Break
Wallasey golf club was created in 1981 by members of Royal Liverpool after their own course became too crowded. Wallasey was designed by Tom Morris Snr of St Andrews who has designed such notable courses as Carnoustie, Kirkcaldy, Prestwick, Muirfield, Balcomie and Royal North Devon amongst many others. The course has been renovated several times over the years by such highly respected designers as Alec Herd, Harold Hilton, James Braid, Hawtree & Taylor and Donald Steel. The result is a phenomenal course that has tested the worlds best golfers in the qualifying stages of the Open Championship. An 18 hole, par 72 links course measuring 6,649 yards from the championship blue tees with undulating fairways and elevated tees & greens amongst the sand dunes. The course looks out from the Wirral Peninsula over the Irish sea to the Welsh mountains. The first Stableford competition was played at Wallasey and has since gone on to be the most popular scoring system in golf. Invented by Dr Frank Stableford who was a member of the club, that was born out of frustration of the strong winds making the long par 4’s unreachable in regulation.
West Lancashire golf club is a remarkable classic links course which holds the esteemed honour of being in the oldest ten golf courses in England. Designed by C K Cotton the course opened for play in 1873 and has tested golfers of all abilities ever since. The club has hosted many Open Championship Qualifying events and seen some of the biggest names in golf. You will find greens that are raised up on plateaus and others that are hidden in hollows, all with their own subtle undulations. There are eleven holes over four hundred yards and wilderness that can punish any waylaid shots. An 18 hole, par 72 links course that measures 6,992 yards when played from the black championship tees. The clubhouse has stunning panoramic views across the 9th and 18th greens out to the river Mersey, Anglesey and the Welsh Hills.
Ormskirk golf club is something of a hidden gem on the infamous North West coastline. The club was founded in 1899 as a 9 hole course on 125 acres of land that had never before been ploughed as it was the Royal Deer Park of Lathom House, a further 9 holes were added in 1903. Designed by Harold Hilton you can really feel that the two sets of nines have different characteristics. With the front nine being longer and the back nine being shorter but trickier. An 18 hole, par 70 parkland course that measures 6,533 yards when played from the back tees. Ormskirk has lush fairways that are lined by trees with large well protected greens. The course has hosted numerous regional Open Qualifying Evenets throughout the years. On the 8th & 9th holes you will pass New Park House which was laid siege to by Oliver Cromwell’s forces in 1644.
